In eastern DRCongo, where conflict places children at unimaginable risk, Marie stands as a beacon of hope. As a child protection officer with MONUSCO, her job involves rescuing children abducted by armed groups and helping them reintegrate into society. Recently, her work took on new meaning.

Marie learned that several children, including girls were being held captive by local armed forces. Before her NYOTA training, Marie would have deferred to her office’s lawyer, believing advocacy was not her role. But after completing the Communication and Advocacy module that is part of the NYOTA curriculum, she decided to act. “I broke the silence, I removed the fear, and I set myself the objective to act.”

For a month, Marie tirelessly negotiated with a local commander of the DRCongo army. She remained patient and persistent. “With my courage and determination, the commander called me himself to hand over the children.”

Because of Marie, the children are now receiving critical care needed for their healing.

Marie’s story embodies the heart of NYOTA: a collaborative journey where women grow in confidence and courage, stepping into leadership and transforming lives together.”
