NYOTA graduates are doing remarkable things in their organizations and in Beni, DRC. They also have experience and wisdom that benefits people outside their immediate context.

With that in mind, I asked NYOTA members what they would advise young women who are early in their professional careers. The following five essential steps for success are appropriate for female professionals, regardless of where they live and work.

Jeanette Longhi, Naomie Bakwanamaha, and Linda Etoy. 2024 NYOTA Leadership Program Graduates

1. Cultivate Confidence

Confidence is foundational to professional success. Jeannette emphasizes, “Have confidence in your skills and knowledge, and avoid doubts in your initiatives.” Trusting in your capabilities helps you to approach challenges with a positive mindset and assert your place in any professional setting.

2. Build a Strong Network

Jeannine Kathina advises, “Build a solid network and establish professional relationships. Seek mentors.” Naomie Bakwanamaha continues, “Maintain healthy collaboration with other groups in your field.” A solid network is a place for support, encouragement, advice, and even career assistance. It’s also a place where you can test out new ideas and get feedback. And don’t forget that your network is a place where you can contribute and assist others.

3. Understand Your Role and Goals

“Understand your job profile…and align yourself with your organization’s objectives,” advises Marie Muyisa. A clear understanding of one’s responsibilities and organizational goals positions any staff member to more meaningfully contribute to the organization. This clarity also informs wise decision-making.

4. Master Clear and Objective Communication

Effective communication requires you to convey your ideas without ambiguity. Clear communication focuses on delivering your message in a way that your listeners can understand. And always align your message with organizational goals. Jeannette advises, “Develop your clear and objective communication skills aimed at achieving the organization’s objectives.”

5. Embrace Initiative

“Be bold and unafraid to take initiative. It is essential to seize opportunities, ask questions, and assert your ideas with confidence,” writes Linda Etoy. Taking the lead and seizing opportunities that benefit your organization sets you apart and demonstrates that you are a “team player.” It’s also a great way to push your confidence!

Conclusion

Success in any career is a journey. By cultivating confidence, building networks, understanding your role, mastering clear communication, and showing initiative, you lay a strong foundation for a thriving professional life.

These steps, offered to young women professionals, apply to us all, regardless of where we are in our careers.
